News Sources

While any news source has the potential to report stories connected to social justice, I have found that the following sources seek out such stories. If you know of a great social-justice-focused resource that should be part of the list, please let me know.

The Advocate–The leading source for up-to-date and extensive LGBT news: gay news, LGBT rights, politics, entertainment.

Al Jazeera America–unbiased, fact-based, in-depth stories of U.S. and international news, including sports, business, lifestyle and investigative journalism.

Atlanta Black Star–Created to publish empowering narratives for all people of African descent and everyone who adheres to our culture.

Bitch Media–Bitch Media’s mission is to provide and encourage an engaged, thoughtful feminist response to mainstream media and popular culture.

Buzzfeed–The Social News and Entertainment Company.

Code Switch (NPR)–Frontiers of race, culture, and ethnicity written by a team of journalists fascinated by the overlapping themes of race, ethnicity and culture, how they play out in our lives and communities, and how all of this is shifting.

Color of Change–Color of Change exists to strengthen Black America’s political voice. Our goal is to empower our members – Black Americans and our allies – to make government more responsive to the concerns of Black Americans and to bring about positive political and social change for everyone.

Colorlines–Colorlines is a daily news site where race matters, featuring award-winning investigative reporting and news analysis. Colorlines is published by Race Forward, a national organization that advances racial justice through research, media and practice.

Common Dreams–Breaking News and Views for the Progressive Community.

Democracy Now!–A national, daily, independent, award-winning news program hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez.

The Feminist Wire–Socio-political and cultural critique of anti-feminist, racist, and imperialist politics pervasive in all forms and spaces of private and public lives of individuals globally.

HuffPost Black Voices–Black News, Entertainment, Style and Culture.

HuffPost Latino Voices–Get the latest news on Latino music, celebrities, film, politics and Latin America. Also discuss the issues that matter most to the Hispanic community.

HuffPost Queer Voices–Examine issues, explore culture and join discussions on the latest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender news that matters most to the LGBT community.

HuffPost Women–Women’s Issues, Advice, and Personal Stories.

Indian Country Media Today Network–A website and weekly online newsletter that is a national news source for Native people in North America.

Jezebel–Celebrity, Sex, Fashion for Women. Without Airbrushing.

Latino USA (NPR)–Radio journal of Latino news and culture in English.

Mic–Founded on a simple idea: Young people deserve a news destination that offers quality coverage tailored to them.

Ms. Magazine–More Than a Magazine – A Movement.

Mother Jones–Smart, fearless journalism, Mother Jones is a nonprofit news outlet that delivers bold and original award-winning reporting on the urgent issues of our day, from politics and climate change to education and the food we eat.

The Nation–Weekly journal of opinion, featuring analysis on politics and culture.

Real Change–Exists to provide opportunity and a voice for low-income and homeless people while taking action for economic, social and racial justice.

The Root–The Root is the premier news, opinion and culture site for African-American influencers.  Founded in 2008, under the leadership of Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., The Root provides smart, timely coverage of breaking news, thought-provoking commentary and gives voice to a changing, more diverse America.

Slate Magazine–Politics, Business, Technology, and the Arts.

TakePart–Stories that Matter, Actions That Count.

Think Progress–Editorially independent, not partisan, progressive, committed to accuracy.

Upworthy–Awesome, fun, interesting videos and graphics about stuff that matters.

Vox–A general interest news site for the 21st century with a simple mission: Explain the news.
